Interior Overhaul // Mid Century Essentials.

Saturday, August 31, 2013

Wanting to redecorate your space can be an absolutely overwhelming thought.
Where do I start? What do I look for? Can I do it on a budget?
Once you know the key pieces you need turning your home into a mid century masterpiece the hunt can be fun and super cheap. When I started decorating my home the flea market, Goodwill, Craig's List, and estate sales became my best friend. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to make your home into a time capsule, all it takes is a good eye and a few weekend hunts to get great pieces that will help you transform the look of your interior space.
Bright pops of color, teak wood, and statement furniture can make such a big difference in your design. Look for pieces that have fun lines and unique patterns. Adding  mixtures of textures and colors can really transform your space and give it a cozy and well designed look.
Here are some of my picks for key pieces to turn your home from bland to MCM fab!

Foodie Favorite // Santa Fe Corn Chowder

Friday, August 30, 2013

The weather is going to start cooling off here soon and it's going to be time to whip out all of your favorite fall food recipes! When it's a chilly night my family loves a good bowl of soup and this recipe is always a hit with my husband and my littles. It is spicy and sweet, easy to cook, and so easy to customize. The perfect soup for just about anyone!

Here is what you'll need:
1-2 pounds of chicken breast cut into bite size pieces (of course this can be substituted if you're a herbivore)
1 chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tbs butter (this can also be substituted if need be)
2 cubes chicken bouillon
1 cup hot water
2 cups half and half (again, you can totally switch this out)
2 cups cheese (we used shredded sharp cheddar)
1 can creamed corn
1 can green chilies
cumin, chipotle chili powder, salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste.
chopped tomato and green onion for garnish
In a large pot brown chicken, butter, onion, and garlic making sure not to burn the butter or garlic, that leaves an icky bitter taste and will ruin your yummy soup! While your chicken is going, dissolve your bouillon cubes in the cup on warm water, usually there is directions on how to do this on the packaging. After everything is looking browned add your cup of water and dissolved bouillon into the mixture and season with cumin, chipotle, salt, and pepper. I left the amount of these seasonings up to you because everyone has different tastes. We like to kick up the spicy in our house but it may not be your style. Make it how you like it!
Bring the soup to a boil and then reduce and simmer for about five minutes. When your timer dings add in your half and half slowly, making sure to stir while your pouring. Next, slowly add in your cheese of choice, making sure you are combining it while pouring it in, we don't want big ole' hunks of cheese so make sure it's fully combined before you're ready to add anything else.
Now it's time for creamed corn and green chillies! Stir those right in with your preferred amount of hot sauce and let it sit and heat through out. Don't forget to give it a stir every once in awhile so it doesn't burn or separate. Now you're ready to plate and garnish! Besides tomatoes and green onions you could also add a dalop of sour cream, a sprinkle of goat cheese, a few jalapenos, whatever you like!
I hope you enjoy this recipe, if you try it out make sure you leave a comment and let me know what you think! Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

TILT // Playful Pieces.

Thursday, August 29, 2013

This week I'm loving fun bright hues and silly accessories. Getting dressed should be exciting and all of my favorite things this week have a funky flair to them which in my opinion makes them downright irresistible! Who can stay away from bags shaped like taxis, studs shaped like little deer, and furry little kitty cat phone cases? I can't say no! My absolute favorite thing on this list has got to be those Heart Work heals, the fun colors and retro style have my heart screaming "Yes!!" and my pocket book screaming "What the hell are you thinking?".

// Marina looks stunning in the acoustic video of "Lies" and she sounds absolutely amazing. It helps that she is in a gorgeous vintage house during the shoot. It's definitely my video pick of the week!

// It's going to start getting cooler out so you better jot down this yummy Zumma Borscht soup recipe from the lovely ladies at Oh So Lovely Vintage! I love a good soup! I'll be sharing a chowder recipe on Friday so stay tuned!

// LilyPieVintagex is one of my absolute favorite Etsy shops out there! I love the idea of up cycling china and making it fun and modern! This Peter Rabbit Saucer is super cute but I've had my eye on another item that is currently sold out! I'll keep waiting for it to come back and then I'm snatching it up, no hints!

// I love a craft project that I can complete in one afternoon and still enjoy a glass of wine and a movie after,  so this little list of 20 easy craft projects from A Beautiful Mess is going to be bookmarked forever! I'm definitely going to try the lyric wall art first!

What are you loving this week?

Kitsch Krazy // Retro wallpaper revisited.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

I've been thinking a lot lately about adding a statement wall to my daughter's vintage inspired room, especially after seeing how beautifully Diana from LivyLoveDesigns designed her daughter Olivia's room. Now I'm in the market for a fun floral wallpaper that is sure to make a statement and of course by Marli's request it has to be pink! So I'm bringing wallpaper back to my Kitsch Krazy segment and showing off these lovely floral designs! Which one is your favorite? I really love number seven, it's so bright and fun!

Around The Web // Posts I Love!

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Lately I've been a little lax about catching up on my favorite blogs, I think we've all been there! Most of the time I can't get down to my office even if I try and reading blogs on a mobile device can be iffy. Sometimes I get a few in but leaving comments is hard guys! So if you've ever wondered why I don't reply to comments often or why I don't comment on your posts you can blame my iPhone. Yesterday I had a little time to play catch up and boy am I glad I did! The blog world is such a wonderful place full of inspiration and knowledge so today I'm sharing some of my favorite posts from all my favorite blogging ladies! If you get a chance check out all of these posts and let me know which ones you love!

I really enjoyed this guide to promoting your business through Instagram via Le Caseta de Paper. Laura is one of my newest sponsors and her tips and tricks for promoting your blog or business via your favorite social media site is so helpful for those of you who run shop accounts or use your feed to promote your blog content!

Who doesn't like a good donut? My lovely friend Chantal from PonyChops did a wonderful Etsy round up featuring all things donut! Also make sure you check out the amazing donut themed shoes she created for Doe Deere, creative director of Lime Crime Cosmetics! She always does an amazing job and I was so excited to see that Doe took notice!

Crystal from Billie Jean runs one of my long time favorite style blogs, it is almost hard to hop over there now days because it makes me want to go on a shopping spree every visit! This outfit is one of my favorites as of late, can you tell why? Not to mention the girl is gorgeous and her little girl is so cute too!

Confessions of a Hairstylist is one of my newest blog loves! Jenny's tutorials are so amazing and you can tell that she really has a passion for all things hair. That's a girl after my own heart right there. I especially loved checking out her Portfolio, all of the images are stunning and her work is so beautiful!

I'm a pretty big fan of salsa, I would like to meet one person who isn't! So when I saw Becca's recipe for Salsa Verde on her blog LadyFace I knew that it was a must try! I bought all the ingredients and I can't wait to whip it up and enjoy it as a snack later this week!

Kaelah from Little Chief Honeybee shared this really awesome tutorial awhile back on how to make over sized gallery prints for super cheap. I've been looking for something to do above our bed for some time and I think that this brilliant tutorial is going to help me fill up that huge blank wall that has been screaming at me for months now. P.S. Aren't Kaelah's wedding photos dreamy? Every time she shows them off I swoon!

I talk all the time about my love for semi homemade treats, I've even shared some Sandra Lee style recipes here on the blog! I saw this gummy candy recipe over at A Beautiful Mess and I knew instantly that it would be a big hit around our house. The kids love anything gummy and definitely anything candy.

And back to donuts! The lovely Leah from Freutcake is one of my favorite all time bloggers, whenever she likes my Instagram photos or tweets me I fan girl out for about five minutes. Recently she had the brilliant idea to throw a donut party and she created a pretty little inspiration board just for the occasion! Guys, grilled donuts, seriously go check it out!

What blogs and blog posts have you been loving lately? Send me the links and I'll check them out! I love finding new blogs to read and it's been awhile since I've added any new ones to the list!
Have a great Tuesday!

Insta-Lately // Keepin' Busy!

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

My blogging schedule has been all out of whack lately, I blame it on the mass amounts of painting, Netflicks documentary watching, and vacation planning I've been doing this past week. I completed a few new pieces that I will be listing in the shop section of my blog, but if you just can't wait they are available on my newly opened Society6 shop! You can find some of my designs on cellphone cases, throw pillows and laptop skins as well! I've also received a few more custom orders so I'm excited to start moving on those in the next few days. I have a few more custom spots open so if you would like to place an order with me visit my contact page to file a request.
I babbled the other day all about my birthday and wanting to plan a little cocktail party, but plans have changed for the better and now I'm super stoked for October. My husband and I have been talking about planning a trip for such a long time and it looks like it's finally going to happen! We never took a honey moon and have never taken any sort of trip alone. Before the kids we always went with family, or visited family, and now eight years later we will finally get a weekend to enjoy for ourselves. This is epic stuff right here! We decided on Memphis because I want to sort of recreate my Blue Hawaii childhood birthday party as an adult. I mentioned before that I had an Elvis themed bash as a kiddo and then my parents surprised me with a trip to Graceland and it was one of my favorite birthdays to date. Now that I'm going to be 23 I figured it's about time to walk in Memphis, and of course I will be bringing my blue suede shoes. I've been all over the interwebz planning our little getaway, but if you have any suggestions they are more than welcome. I want to get as much food and booze in as I possibly can. Hey, no kids, I better live it up right?
So it's been a busy and exciting week to say the least, here is a little taste of my life lately via Instagram!
Hope you are all having a fantastic week!

It's Party Time!

Monday, August 19, 2013

Nothing is better than a good party, so this week's pin-spirations are shindig inspired. I haven't thrown a good party in awhile and I have to say, I miss it! Now that we have the house and plenty of room for friends and family I'm so excited to start planning parties again. My birthday is not too far away and a cocktail party sounds like a swell way to celebrate. No party is complete without plenty of balloons, confetti, and of course cocktails! Here are some pretty pins to put you in the party mood!
Follow me on pinterest for a preview of my pin-spirations every week!

Shop Update // New items and a custom print!

Friday, August 16, 2013

Happy Friday lovelies! I've been working hard to stock up on a few different print and card designs to sell in the shop over the past week. I have already added the 'As You Wish' print to the shop and the new style of thank you cards will be going up soon as well! Are there any special quotes or florals that you would like to see me add to the shop? Comment and let me know!
Recently I received a custom order from the lovely Sunae at Little Foal. She wanted a bright and cheery floral print to hang in her new bedroom. We worked together to come up with something really fun and happy. I especially love the colors she chose and I'm so happy with the outcome! I cannot wait until she receives it, it was my first custom piece and international sale, yay!
If you would like a custom print visit my contact page to apply and I'll get to you as soon as I can!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! There aren't too many left this summer! I'll be working on a commission, doing a photo shoot for that special project I keep babbling about, and working on some crochet pieces!
What are your weekend plans?

TILT// Bee Friendly.

Thursday, August 15, 2013

Bees are kind of my thing, so it's no surprise that today's 'Things I Love' is full of the little buzzing critters. Recently I received international mail from the lovely Kim at What Peggy Said and it contained the most adorable beehive necklace! She knows the way to my heart, I've been wearing it non-stop and it inspired today's post! It was so hard to chose some of my favorite bee related items but I managed to narrow it down to these few things! I am especially in love with that skirt, I could see myself wearing that on so many occasions! So many explanation points, can you tell I'm excited?

Style on Film // Valley of the Dolls.

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

It's no secret that I'm an older lady trapped in the body of a 22 year old, in fact I was an older lady trapped in the body of a seven year old as well. My entire life I have obsessed over the fifties and sixties, it's not something that I stumbled upon one day and became obsessed with. I have lived and breathed vintage fashion, movies, music, and beauty since I was a wee lass. I don't know if it's because my parents let me spend a little too much time with my grandma while growing up or because I'm some reincarnated 60's child but it's something I just can't shake. We won't even discuss the lime green polyester pantsuit I wore to sixth grade, the fact that my seventh birthday party was Blue Hawaii themed, or that I thought Patsy Cline and Elvis where the only artists to play on the radio when I was about five.
My obsession with vintage films has definitely been a huge influence on my style and taste. I grew up watching everything from 30's talkies to Shirley Temple, from old Hollywood films to classic musicals and all of the wonderfully corny 60's romance movies I could possibly get my hands on. I would just watch film after film, soaking it all up.
Since the beginning of this blog I've done a style icon series where I look to the past and some of my favorite icons and talk about their style, evolution in fashion, and how they have influenced my taste and aesthetic when it comes to clothing. I've ranted about lovely ladies from Cher to Priscilla but I haven't had the chance to touch much on the films that have impacted my style so I thought I would change that today.
I figured we would start out a little dark and work our way to the light and fun films. Valley of the Dolls has been called one of the worst films of all time, but I would honestly have to disagree. If you take the almost comedic acting for what it is and just accept it what you have is a visually beautiful and disastrous tale about the rise to stardom. It's more of a cult hit than a renowned film but it's not hard to tell why. This movie is jam packed full of controversial topics from drugs, addiction, and sex to homosexuality and suicide. Although the topics are heavy and the acting is downright terrible, the sixties style and glamor of the three main characters is off the charts.
Sharon Tate looks absolutely stunning in every scene, she may be vapid but at least she can dress (when shes wearing any clothing)! She has such a glamorous vibe through out the movie and her body is bangin'...just saying. You get to see a whole lot of it because she spends her time in France making "art films" also known as soft core porn. It makes me a little sad watching this movie and knowing her death in the movie is foreshadowing to the horrendous fate she suffered a few years later.

Barbra Parkins has probably my favorite role in the film because her character's style is so extreme in some moments and others it is totally accessible, not to mention she's the most sane lady in the bunch. I love the pale pink number shown below and the orange outfit she wears during her visit with  Patty Duke's character at the Sanitarium. She carries some of the more artsy moments of the film, especially during her stardom as a fashion and beauty model.
If you're into a more casual style then Patty Duke's character is right up your alley, and I seriously only mean for style purposes because she is an absolute nightmare throughout the entire film. She is a "dolled out"  and boozed up star with a self destructive attitude and a superiority complex, much like her almost co-star the one and only Judy Garland, who was ironically booted from the movie for being too wasted to make it on set.
source.
All in all the film is packed full of beautiful sixties fashion, the lovely late Sharon Tate, and enough pills and booze to give you a contact high.
I obviously don't condone watching this film if you are a young since it's jammed full of inappropriate moments, but it's a must see for all you adults who love a good dose of vintage fashion and interiors. Speaking of, I'll leave you with this stunning interior shot from the film.
Have you seen Valley of the Dolls? What did you think?

Weekend Plans // High Fiber Diet.

Friday, August 9, 2013

T.G.I.F everyone! I'm so glad that it's finally the weekend and I can start to work on some fun projects! Today I'm showing off all of the little crafty things I'll be accomplishing over the next few days. I've been putting a lot of drawing and painting time in and I've really been missing my yarn stash so I decided to take the weekend to finish up some projects and start a few that I've been excited to begin. Fall will be here before we know it and it's always a good idea to start stocking up on holiday gifts and scarves for the season.

I've been working on knitting a cowl with the sunshine-esque hand spun wool I received in the mail quite awhile ago. I love the color and texture of this yarn, it's so beautiful and soft. I'm debating on whether to keep this piece or throw it in the shop, I guess when it's complete I will know.
I'm also going to start knitting up the thick merino that my husband calls Mint Chocolate Chip. I'm really excited to work with this yarn because the texture is gorgeous and it knits up rather quickly. Perfect for a weekend project!

I'll be getting my dip dye skills on at some point over the weekend. In my last Whimsey Box we received tote bags to dye and I think it will transform nicely into a new yarn bag for my bedroom projects. Anything to keep me organized! If it turns out nicely I'll share a little tutorial on it!

I've also been working hard on a commissioned art piece and I'll be sketching up some different layouts in my free time. I'm so in love with this project and I cannot wait to see the finished product and share it with you all. All I can reveal is that it's kind of a big deal! Yay!
What are you doing this weekend? Do you have any adventures or crafty things planned?

A Very Mod Wishlist!

Thursday, August 8, 2013

If you haven't heard by now, ModCloth has been running a wonderful sale the last few days! I stopped by to browse and ending up swooning over all of this peachy goodness and picking up a few pieces to add to my wardrobe. Obviously peach is one of my favorite colors and who could pass up all of these perfect collars? I am especially in love with the Pinch, Lash, Smidgen Flats! How cute are they?! I'm going to have to pick up a pair once they stock them in my size, I hope they do!
Which one of these lovely numbers is your favorite?

Have you ever heard of Whimsey Box?

Monday, August 5, 2013

The past few months I have posted little glimpses of my subscription box and I always get tons of questions about them and if I suggest getting a subscription so I thought I would talk about my box today!
Subscription boxes have become all the rage lately, and it seems like there is a box for almost everyone. Beauty boxes, clothing and accessory boxes, and my all time favorite, craft boxes! A few months ago I decided that I would take the leap and sign up for a monthly subscription to Whimsey Box because I'm a constant crafter and it's nice to do something a little different every month. I usually stick to crochet or painting so this box would give me the opportunity to make new things and stretch my creative abilities. Each month a new box comes chalked full of craft supplies, a prepared project, a cute little art print, and sometimes even a fun freebie, all wrapped up in a beautifully colored satin ribbon. Each box is uniquely different and they have offered a range of projects from tye-dye to cement planters. In my opinion the projects that Whimsey Box has been sending my way just keep getting better and better! If you love a good surprise and crafting is something you enjoy then I definitely suggest that you sign up! It costs only $15.00 a month and you can also buy a bulk subscription, the price is definitely worth it. The supplies and items you receive are worth more and the project is already planned for you so it's easy as pie! If you want to learn more about Whimsey Box they explain how it works here, and they also opened a shop and they provide great deals on the cutest supplies!
The project shown is  stenciled lavender sachets from my April box! I loved this project because it was fun and functional. The kit came with stencils, fabric paint, a sponge brush, three tiny satchels, a huge bag of lavender (like HUGEEE), and all the instructions on the back of a really cute art print.  The project only took a few minutes and now our closet and room smell so good! The best part is the box doubles as storage so I have a place to keep all the extra stencils, paint, and lavender.
I really hope you guys check out the site and if you have anymore questions about the boxes feel free to ask! I would recommend them to any crafty soul!
* I was not compensated for this post, I purely believe in the product and recommend it to my readers.
