February is Black History Month so even though we include learning about people of color all year round we are spending a lot more time recognizing black Americans and their contributions to our country this month. We have books that range from slavery to the civil rights movement, touching on topics like peaceful protest, segregation, the integration of schools, and beyond. I asked my kids to pick out their favorite books from our Black History Unit and these are the books they chose :

Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt (Reading Rainbow recommended!)

The Montgomery Story Comic 1957

What was the March on Washington?

I am Martin Luther King Jr. (Ordinary People Change The World)

One Crazy Summer (Newbery Honor Winner)

The Story Of Ruby Bridges

A Kid's Guide To African American History (has over 70 activities included)

If A Bus Could Talk: The Story Of Rosa Parks

The March Series by Senator John Lewis (these are great for older kids, graphic novels!)

Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up To Become Malcolm X

Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up By Sitting Down

It was really hard narrowing down our favorites, but we love these books so much! They each have their own unique and beautiful artwork and they tell stories that are deeply touching and motivating.
