Immune Supporting Thieves + Elderberry Syrup

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

Anyone else hiding from the mass population while the flu is being passed around like wildfire?!
Everyone seems to be coming down with one thing or the other and it's made me realize how important being proactive with your wellness is.
My family and I use oils, tinctures, supplements, and probiotics to keep our immune systems strong all year round instead of just giving it a boost when we feel something coming on or are already sick and it has truly made such a difference in our health. We haven't visited the doctor for anything but a wellness check up in years and I swear it is all thanks to this routine.
This time of year we make a habit of doubling up on Thieves & elderberry syrup as preventative care and it has served us well the past few winters.
Elderberry is packed full of vitamins and antioxidants that support your body in fighting off sickness and Thieves essential oil is historically known for it's immune boosting properties. We roll Thieves on our feet and spine daily as a part of our wellness routine but these two together pack a serious punch that is perfect for keeping you in tip top shape through the cold months!
I love making my own elderberry syrup because it is affordable, easy, and I can use ingredients like raw local honey and a few drops of Thieves Vitality to give it an extra kick of immune support! I wouldn’t be able to make it through the winter without this combination in our wellness cabinet!

Today I thought i would share the recipe I adapted from wellnessmama just in case you’re looking for some immune support this season!

2/3 cup dried black elderberries (about 3 ounces)
3 1/2 cups of water
2 Tablespoons fresh or dried ginger root
1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/2 teaspoon cloves or clove powder
1 cup raw, local honey
2 Drops Thieves Vitality

Pour water into medium saucepan and add elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves.
Bring to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour until the liquid has reduced by almost half.
Remove from heat and let them cool enough to be handled.
Mash the berries carefully using a spoon or other flat utensil.
Pour through a strainer into a glass jar or bowl.
Discard the elderberries (or compost them!) and let the liquid cool to lukewarm.
When it is no longer hot, add 1 cup of honey and 2 Drops Thieves Oil and stir well.
When honey is well mixed into the elderberry mixture, pour the syrup into a quart sized mason jar or 16 ounce glass bottle of some kind.

Store in the fridge and take daily for its immune boosting properties.
Standard dose is ½ tsp to 1 tsp for kids and ½ Tbsp to 1 Tbsp for adults.
If the flu does strike, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear.

I hope that adding this all natural recipe to your routine will help you make it out of this season of sickness alive! If you have any questions about our favorite immune boosting products or our wellness routine, send me an email or leave me a comment! I would love to answer your questions!
